If your analytics show a mysterious spike in direct traffic after a big campaign, UTM hygiene is usually the culprit. Short links, QR codes, and bio pages all need consistent tagging — otherwise Google Analytics cannot tell Instagram from email from print.
The four UTM fields that matter most
- utm_source — where the click came from (
instagram,newsletter,qr_print) - utm_medium — the channel type (
social,email,offline) - utm_campaign — your initiative name (
summer_launch_2026) - utm_content — optional variant for A/B tests (
hero_ctavsfooter_cta)
Example workflow with ByeStar
- Start with your landing page URL plus UTMs
- Paste it into ByeStar and add a readable alias
- Use the short link in one channel only — duplicate per channel with different
utm_source - Compare results in GA4 under Acquisition → Traffic acquisition
Common mistakes
Inconsistent naming: Instagram, instagram, and IG create three separate rows. Pick lowercase and stick to it.
Missing medium: Source alone is not enough. Always pair source with medium.
Reusing one link everywhere: One link = one blended mess in analytics. Create separate links per channel.
Pro tip: document your taxonomy
