QR codes are everywhere: packaging, posters, event badges, restaurant tables. Yet plenty of campaigns still treat them like decorative squares. Here are seven mistakes we see constantly — and how to fix them.
1. Using static QR codes on long-lived materials
Printed menus, billboards, and product boxes live for months. Static codes lock you into one URL forever. Dynamic QR codes let you update the destination without reprinting.
2. No call-to-action near the code
A naked QR code asks users to guess. Add micro-copy: "Scan for 15% off" or "Scan to view menu." CTAs can double scan rates.
3. Linking to desktop-only pages
Most scans happen on phones. If your landing page is not mobile-optimized, you pay for the scan and lose the conversion.
4. Forgetting a typeable fallback URL
Not everyone scans. Print the branded short link under the QR so people can type it manually.
5. Zero UTM tracking
QR traffic often appears as direct in analytics. Tag every QR destination with utm_medium=qr and a campaign name.
6. Low contrast or tiny print size
Test scans from realistic distances. Dark-on-light works best. Minimum size depends on distance — when in doubt, go bigger.
7. No post-scan analytics review
Scans without analysis are vanity. Track location, time of day, and device. Rotate underperforming destinations weekly.
